One of our main goals is to share with other Wiccans and Pagans some of the magickal practices we have found useful to positively affect our world.

The main political problem that seems to be on everyone’s mind right now is the Presidential election, particularly the heavily contested democratic primary. However, the spell I suggest here will work equally well for the general election, once the democratic nominee has been selected. It is not meant to take the place of active participation in the mundane political process, but rather to provide a spiritual supplement that will boost the effectiveness of those efforts, as well as provide a psychological boost to help keep you fighting for what you believe.

I’m going to assume that the majority of you reading this have not only made up your minds who you support in the democratic primary, but are either strongly in favor of one candidate or strongly opposed to the other (particularly if you are planning to vote for John McCain in the general election). There has been a lot of bad press directed at all three candidates, but particularly at Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The following is a spell from the hoodoo tradition, designed to send negativity back whence it came while positively supporting your candidate.

For this spell you will need:

1. a special candle poured with the bottom half black and the top half white (available at occult supply shops that offer hoodoo equipment and supplies);

2. a knife sharp enough to carve and shape the candle;

3. a mirror you can burn the candle on;

4. optional: “reversible” oil, which should be available at the same place you find the candle;

5. matches or a lighter to light the candle with.

First, select the name of the person or organization you believe is responsible for the negativity being aimed at your candidate. Write that name out on a piece of paper, then hold that paper in front of a mirror; copy out the name as it appears in the mirror. That is the lettering you will be carving on the black half of the candle. Keep in mind that carving in wax with a knife is difficult to do, so you might want to write out the name in block writing. Straight lines are easier to carve.

Second, you will cut off the top (white end) of the candle and wick, and shave it flat, so the candle can stand level on that new bottom.

Third, shave the bottom (black end) of the candle, so that it tapers the way the top used to. It may take some work to find the wick at that end, but try to clear half an inch to an inch of it so you will be able to light it easily and keep it burning.

Fourth, carve the mirror writing you prepared earlier along the black side of the candle; carve the name of your candidate in regular writing along the white side of the candle. If you have reversible oil, dress the candle with it by putting some on your hands, and rubbing it on the candle. Stroke the oil away from you along the black portion, and toward you along the white portion, all the while charging the candle by focusing on sending the negativity back to its origins and bringing a positive outcome and blessings for your candidate.

Finally, set the new bottom of the candle on top of the mirror, and light the new top. Notice that your mirror writing is legible in the candle’s reflection in the mirror.

Other options you can add to the spell include:

1. writing out a prayer or affirmation on a square of parchment or brown grocery bag paper, and putting it underneath the candle as it burns;

2. sprinkling the candle with an appropriate powder or herb after you dress it with the oil, or sprinkling a circle of it around the candle on the mirror;

3. saying a prayer or chanting a mantra over the burning candle while you focus your energy on the positive outcome.

As the black end of the candle burns, it will reflect any negativity back to its source and away from your candidate. Then as the white half starts to burn, it will draw positive energy to your candidate.
